Are Hair Transplants Permanent? Does It Work?

Are Hair Transplants Permanent

Are hair transplants permanent? Hair transplant surgery enables a skilled surgeon to relocate hairs from the scalp to a region where hair is thinning. Hair transplantation produces visible long-term outcomes that are thought to be permanent.

For example, some patients see their hair increase in length from two to four inches in one year, while others have to wait two to three years.

Once you arrive at your appointment, ask the doctor what will happen during the procedure and what your chances are. Ask your doctor what’s expected of you during the procedure. Your doctor will evaluate all of your physical, emotional, and medical factors to guide a comfortable and safe procedure.

What types of surgery are available?

Hair transplant surgery is offered by several cosmetic centers throughout the United States.

Hair transplants, also known as hair restoration, are a temporary solution to reduce the appearance of a natural baldness or thinning that occurs due to the use of hormonal treatment or chemotherapy. Hair transplant patients may want to begin treatment as early as two to three months prior to the desired outcome, with completion usually completed within one to two years. How is hair transplantation done?

The procedure involves removing the follicles of the hair. Before the hair transplantation, the follicle on the scalp is removed with tweezers. The patient then has to apply a chemical solution. This chemical solution is injected into the follicle. With this procedure, the patient is able to regrow the hair in an hour or two and after three years. Hair transplants, however, take a lot of time. After about a year after transplant, the hair on the patients scalp becomes thinner and weaker.

How long is hair transplantation procedure?

Hair transplantation surgery takes up to six months to complete. During the operation, several small vessels are inserted to supply the scalp with a sufficient blood supply. After the procedure, the patient must wash it off with a chemical solution and apply new shampoo, and the procedure is again repeated until the new hair grows on the scalp. After the hair grows to a maximum of 3 centimeters, it is then cut off and the patient gets some more hair on the scalp and it grows further. In most cases, the maximum hair growth is achieved after only two years after surgery and the patients will not be able to grow hair naturally for years after the procedure.

What if I get a bad reaction after my procedure?

Hair transplant is a very serious procedure and carries serious risks, including:

High rate of infection in patients with compromised immune systems and poor immune function

Irregular, rapid hair growth

Bleeding from the scalp after treatment

Blood in your urine and hair after treatment

Will I need to take any prescription drugs during the operation?

No, the medications used during hair transplant surgery do not need to be taken prior to or after the procedure.

Will I be able to work after the hair transplant surgery?

Yes. The surgeon may remove hair from the scalp and replace it with a wig or other hair accessory, but most patients can work as normal.

What can happen during surgery?

During hair transplant surgery, you’ll be asked to lift a section of the scalp, creating a small opening. Your surgeon will move a needle into this opening. This needle will go into the follicle in the bottom right area of your scalp, where it’s attached to the hair follicle and the hair stem.

The surgeon will use one of several types of microscopic instruments to cut the follicles on either side of the opening. This opening will be left open for a period of time (usually several weeks) and the new skin will grow from the new location. After about three weeks, the new skin will become attached to the follicle. The new skin will be more dense and harder to cut, but you can still apply your favorite gel and powder to your new hair.
