What is food addiction? Food addiction is when individuals consume excessive amounts of carbohydrates and fat-based foods every day, and feel deficient and unhappy when they do not consume them.

Food addiction is the formation of a constant desire to eat. The person becomes so focused on having the food that they begin to lose any sense of well-being. There may be other types of eating disorders that are not related to food addiction, but the addiction is the defining characteristic and the symptoms of these disorders are also the same as those of food addiction. Food addiction is characterized by severe food cravings, the inability to stop eating, withdrawal symptoms, and body dissatisfaction.

How does food addiction manifest itself?

Food addiction is often self-inflicted. The eating behaviors that people develop due to the craving for food are called cravings. Food cravings can be the result of the individual believing that eating will make them feel good, a result of an addictive substance, or a combination of both. When people learn that their cravings are causing them to stop eating, they feel bad or depressed about their food choices.

The food addiction symptoms include:

An overeating disorder, such as bulimia

An overeating and cravings disorder, including compulsive eating, binging, or skipping meals
